Lykke Li killed at the Highline Ballroom last night. I was pretty unfamiliar with her until my friend Hannah told me about her a week or so ago, now I can't get her songs out of my head.

She's such a fabulous performer and plus it doesn't hurt that she's cute.

This was the beginning of the 12 hr drive to get our puppy!

The Quest

Six hours later we arrived outside of Joplin, Missouri, and met with the very nice lady from DiamondDoodles who gave us our two pound bundle of joy.

We stopped to take a few photos of our shy little pup. He wouldn't look at the camera.

He slept a whole lot.

He was a lot less camera shy by the end of the trip.

A few days after the 12 hr drive we took him to a shoot I was doing in Washington Park.

We call this trick, "Puppy on a Roller Coaster."

He still sleeps a lot.

I feel so bad because I'm leaving in two days. I'm like a dead-beat father.

I got an internship with RollingStone!! I cannot believe it, and it's all happening so fast. I need to find a place to live real fast, because I start the beginning of next week.

It's going to be quite a ride. Expect lots of updates.

February and March have been insane. Chicago to Champaign to St. Louis to Springfield to New York to Rockford and back to Normal for a while. Lots of work and fun tho. Here is a not so brief recap.

MVC Agony

We left on friday morning for the MVC tournament in St. Louis. ISU was seeded 3rd.

We ate delicious burritos.

We checked into our hotel.

Swimming!

Media dinner.

I had to sit in a 2 by 3 ft square with my name on it.

ISU beat Evansville and we advanced.

Katie (middle) did a great job!

Then we played Creighton.

This dunk was number 6 on ESPN's Countdown!

We crushed them and we advanced to the Championship against UNI!

ISU came out cold and we were trailing at halftime.

Osiris Eldridge went off in the second half, I think he made 4 three pointers in a row.

Even after the huge comeback, we lost by 3 in overtime.

We got robbed. I don't think I'll want to watch basketball for a while.

Next year we're winning it all.

Good news: I'm going to New York City on Saturday!! I've never been there, but expect a lot of touristy pictures!!

The Vidette crew and I went to ICPA this last weekend. ICPA is the Illinois College Publishers Association. They give out awards and have workshops, but most importantly, Rachel and I got to compete in a "shoot out." The topic was "The Economy"

This was my shot, it was a little weak. I got 9th. Rachel did a great job and got third!

We got to stay in a swanky hotel in Chicago, and then we went out to a piano bar.

In Dr. Bowman's four years at Illinois State University, he has pursued funding for numerous construction and renovation projects to improve ISU. Under his presidency the average ACT score for applicants to ISU has reached 25.2 for 2009. He has continued his goal of transforming ISU into a "public ivy" league school.

What was on my "Mystery Roll"

When I returned from Paris this summer I developed all my film except one roll of black and white 120, because the place I drop my film off cost extra to do black and white. Since I'm cheap, I decided to do it myself. I forgot what was on this roll, and it sat in my apartment for a 5 months. When I had a chance to develop it, I had no idea what was on it. I was so happy with the results.

I used my Yashica A, which has no meter and sometimes doesn't work very well, so I was pumped that they all turned out.

After renewing my love of Beverly Hills Cop with Adam, Emily, and Vanessa while in Chicago last weekend, I purchased the "Triple Feature" edition at Circuit City.

Also, Chicago was great, even though I opted out of Lollapalooza. I walked and took some pics with my Holga that I am waiting to develop.

Facebook has a terrible auto color and contrast program. Perfect for pics of your bro doing a keg-stand or beer bong, but that's about it.

Look at the difference, both pictures were identical before they were posted online. Flickr looks the exact same as the original file, and the facebook one looks washed out and gross.

My Last Day in Paris

It was so sad watching my last Parisian sunset.

We finally went to the top of the Eiffel Tower at sunset. It was really cool, but claustrophobia coupled with the height made me not inclined to go to the very top. I was content with the view from the middle.

Obviously we wanted to go out with a bang, so we all met beneath the Eiffel tower and the wine began to flow. A good time was had by all.

I woke up the next day feeling the wine and headed to the airport, only to find out my flight was delayed by 3 hours. I got some sleep and felt better when I boarded the plane.

Since I was crossing the Atlantic Ocean, I figured this was cheesy yet fitting.

Although, at times, I had my doubts, I finally made it back to the USA as illustrated by the flight map in the headrest in front of me.

Since I was delayed in Paris, I missed my connecting flight from Cleveland to St. Louis and Continental Airlines put me up in a pretty nice Marriott Hotel for the night. I had two beds and made sure to sleep in both of them.

Finally, I'm home.

I miss all of my Paris friends a lot though, but hopefully we have a reunion in a couple months. They were a great group, and I can't wait to see them again.

I move into my new apartment tomorrow, so that will make the 5th place I've lived this year! (Watterson, old house, Paris, new house, apartment)

Day 1. Andrea arrived in Paris via bus late Tuesday night. We rode the metro back to my apartment where we caught up on each other's lives and ate a late dinner. It was so nice to see a familiar face in such a strange place. Andrea was tired from a full day of travel to get here from Grenada so we went to sleep.
Day 2. We woke up early and headed to the Marché D'Aligre to purchase some fresh strawberries and look at the gypsy flea market. We stumbled onto a scene of some sort of movie that, I can only assume, is about a woman walking with a child through a market.

I showed Andrea a street that is good for sight seeing and shopping for her to check out, while I was in class all afternoon. When class was over we met and began our first adventure. (above) Andrea and I ventured the green walk back to my apartment.

Andrea and I walked across the Ile Saint-Louis passed where Marie Antoinette was held before her execution. We continued to the Ile De La Cité and saw the Notre Dame from the outside.

(above) Then after wandering the latin quarter, we found a nice brasserie and got some sort of delicious potato, cheese, bacon, and onion dish. I ordered for both of us in French. Needless to say Andrea, the waiter, and I were thoroughly impressed.

After a great meal, Andrea and I ventured along the Seine River to cross the Pont-Neuf at night. (above) We walked to the Louvre and Andrea looked inside of the Pyramid. I love the Louvre at night, as you can probably tell from my flickr. From the Tulleries, we watched the Eiffel tower's light show on the hour.

Day 3. We woke up late, but still found a great day outside. My classes were cancelled due to a Metro strike, so Andrea and I had the whole day to rome Paris. We started out by catching a Metro to Montmarte. We enjoyed a kebab that was "to die for." But in Andrea's infinite knowledge, she knew that the fries were already soggy.

We went in the Sacré Coeur (above) and visited the small artisan square at the top of Montmarte. Then we walked down Montmarte toward the Moulin-Rouge and the redlight district.

We caught a metro toward the Eiffel Tower and began walking in that direction. At Trocadéro we became a little lost, but after a 4 Euro beer at a nice cafe we felt well enough to finish our trek to the Eiffel Tower.

(above) We came across a very secluded garden to take some nice pictures in front of the Eiffel Tower. In this one we jumped too soon, but it look like we thought it was hilarious.

(above) After a long day of walking we found a very nice tree to sit under and look up at the Eiffel Tower. I'm in love with this picture. It finally felt like Paris.

Day 4. I had morning class, so I let Andrea keep sleeping as I got ready for class. Lunch and class ran late, and I felt terrible for leaving Andrea stuck in my room all morning so I hurried back. She had gotten ready and cleaned up my apartment, what a super lady! However, she did fine me a couple million Euros for the whole ordeal. Thanks.

We went to the Louvre first thing after leaving my apartment. Somehow we convinced a Louvre guard that we were both art history majors, and we both got student cards and we able to get in for free. (above) Andrea tries her hardest to imitate the Mona Lisa which is tiny and in the background.

From there we went to see if we could get into the Notre Dame. It was by far the best tourist attraction I had seen so far. We went in right as Mass was beginning so we sat and enjoyed some Latin songs and then walked around to the back of the Cathedral to see the cross (below). It's super grainy, ugh. I'll be back with a tripod.

After the Notre Dame we walked to the Pantheon and to the campus of the Sorbonne. We went back to the apartment to get a corkscrew and purchase a bottle of wine to enjoy at the Eiffel Tower.

(below) The Eiffel Tower is beautiful at night and I have too many pictures up of it up on my flickr right now. We made plans to go up in it, but the line was the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen.

Day 5. Her flight didn't leave until later that night so we woke up early to go to the Eiffel Tower. No dice. The line was just as long as before. Sorry Andrea, I guess we'll go the next time we are in Paris. But, we went to see the Hotel Raphael from the movie Hotel Chevalier so she can watch the movie and say, "I've been there."

After packing I took her to the bus stations, but we missed the bus! It was terrible, Andrea ended up missing her flight because the busses leave 3 hours and 15 minutes before the flights leave. So Andrea bought another plane ticket and spent another night in Paris.

Day 6. We woke up to the sound of my fire-alarm-esque alarm clock at 6 in the morning and I went with her to Charles De Gaule. We said our goodbyes and thus the great Paris trip ended for Andrea. I watched her go and I caught a train back into Paris.

I still have 3 more weeks left, and now I'm a little lonely. It feels like an eternity. But, at least I'm in Paris!

Now I've lost my model, but expect more to come.

Summer Summers

This is a little project of mine, it still needs a lot more people in it, but that also means that I need a lot more money to fund it. Someday it will get finished, but this is all I have for now.

Summer is almost here. Expect some big things from me in the next couple of months.

I plan on updating the blog every couple of days while I'm in Paris. I just got the Lowerpro Compu Trekker AW for shooting and backpacking while I'm there.

Calumet.com rules and I got all the filters and film I ordered along with the bag the day after I placed my order. I guess it wasn't being shipped too far, but none the less impressive!

I leave for Paris next week so wish me luck.

Fixed Gear Photo Essay

What? Back to back photo essays at The Vidette? The features staff rules for getting color for this story! Yup, I've been way to busy during finals week, but everything has finally calmed down. I just have lots of huge papers and finals to study for. See ya later social life.

The photo essay is on an obscure group at ISU called "Le Fixed Maquis." Brightly painted fixed gear bike, you get my drift. I had a lot of fun shooting it, and am pretty proud of the results. 58 Years of Service on 120

I'm finally done with the Dunn-Barton and Walker Hall photo essay. It's available here!

Dunn-Barton and Walker Halls are being torn down after being built 58 years ago. In order to commemorate their many years of service to ISU we decided to shoot everything with cameras from the era in which they were built.

I shot everything with my grandfather's Yashica-A, and developed everything by hand. Jamey Davidsmeyer shot everything with his Mamiya, and did all the scanning and editing.

I spent an accumulated 16 hours of shooting, editing, and office time working on this project with Jamey.

Jamey is graduating at the end of this semester and I am thankful to have had him as a photo editor for the past year and a half. He's a great photographer and a great person. He will be dearly missed. I wish him luck in everything he does, though he probably wont be needing it. He is a very dedicated and talented person and will go far in anything he does.

..but I'll wish him luck anyway.

My Chicago trip was extremely stressful, but I got my visa! Better yet, I got to take pictures for The Dodos. The show was great. Brendan Losch opened, and the pics I took of his great performance are up on his myspace page here.

I can't get over how great The Dodos were live. I can't wait to see them again in Paris. I'm sure that, by that time, it'll be nice to hear something in English. I'll give an update later on this week if The Dodos use my pictures. (fingers crossed) I have some other pics from the show on my Flickr. Go there.

All in all, it was a marvelous show. I got back to ISU around 3:30 a.m., but it was totally worth it. Oddly enough my computer crashed and I had to borrow my friends computer to finish an assignment for class the next day. I was up at 4:45 when the alleged "earthquake" shook Illinois. It seemed that everyone felt it but me. : ( I'm sad I missed it. I guess I'll have to wait for the next one.

I know I do, and I'm seeing them tomorrow! I'm doing pictures for the wonderful Brendan Losch and it should be a great time. Expect picture to document the occasion.

Also, I'm trying to get my visa for going to Paris this summer at the French Consulate in Chicago. A lot of people have told me that they deny you if you are missing anything on the really long check list. So I'll be double checking that for the rest of tonight. Ugh.

Biking

Last Wednesday, I had a pretty crazy adventure.

Dave and I had talked about fixing up my bike by stripping all the gears and breaking equipment. I skipped my 4 o'clock class and we drove to a house a few miles off campus. Inside the long garage, we took all the extra parts off my bike, but in the process of filling the tires, we broke the tube inside. So, we went to a bike shop and came back around 5:30. I had class at 6 so we quickly fitted the new tube and I hopped on my bike at 5:53 to make it to my 6 o'clock class. I was flying down the street and passing cars. Time of my life, maybe. I turned and hit a brick street. My chain came loose and my back axle was bent. I looked at the clock and I only had 4 minutes to get to class. I pulled the chain back on and dealt with the shimmy in the back axle and went on my way. Somehow, I pulled up to the building that my class was in as the bell was ringing. I came into class dripping sweat with grease all over my hands, but I was on time.

My bike is all fixed now and running just fine.

Dave and Nick helped me fix up my bike. It's so fast and slick looking now.

Also, I am doing a photo essay for the Vidette on the bike club at ISU. Some of the pics I took that day might be in it. I'm pumped about it!

I also got my new lens and my photo editor interview went well. I'll know if I got the job later on this week.

OH MY, The Graduate put on another great show at Club Chrome in Springfield. What a great bunch of guys.

I was unable to borrow the 16-35mm from work, so I was stuck with my 28-90mm variable aperture piece of crap, but still managed to get some great shots.

I was super slow to edit their photos, but if they use them, they should be up soon.

In the mean time, Evan Hunt just did some stuff for them, and it looks great.

Check them out on myspace HERE, and I assure you that you will not be disappointed.

Also, they paid me in beer.

What's Fair

What's Fair had their second concert ever at Club Chrome in Springfield on Saturday, and I was super impressed by them. They were really good, and a lot of fun! Check them out here. I just finished pics for them, and they should be up soon.

Asa Dawson (Ex frontman of The Junior Varsity) played some sweet drums and also supplied backing vocals.

This was their second concert and they sounded amazing. Expect more good things to come.

Wise & Burn

Like a beautiful Pheonix rising from the ashes of Midnight Fall and Park, comes a great little band called Wise & Burn. This was the first show with their new singer from New Jersey, and he sounds great. They are all really cool guys and I urge you to check them out on their myspace right here.

& I got to see Kris Roe, member of The Ataris, perform acoustic. All in all a pretty good show, I had lots of fun. Traffic was terrible around Springfield and I got back to school around 1 a.m. and ate a calzone. D-E-LISH.

Ice Pigs Tournament

After working two 12 hour plus days shooting hockey, I am officially sick of the sport. I started out strong, but by the 15th or 16th game, my arms and back hurt pretty bad. Photography has never been so strenuous!

Jayme and I had a good time. We talked about Will Smith and all his glory while watching I-Robot.

We got all of our meals paid for while we were working in Rockford. It isn't the greatest town in the world, but some of the local restaurants we went to were simply amazing.

After a long day of shooting, I just now got back to school and it is past 2 a.m. It will be a long week ahead, lots of photography, so keep in touch. For me, it's finally time to get some rest.

She is away in Spain for this semester and we all miss her very much. She and I will be meeting in Paris for hopefully, yet another, great shoot.

Jill and I woke up with a plan last Tuesday. We hopped in my jeep during the early morning hours and headed on a whirlwind tour of my homeland, Springfield, IL. JIll even got to rub Abraham Lincoln's nose. I chose to rub his eyebrows instead.
All in all it was a great time and i came back with some great pictures, too.

The Junior Varsity and Park were a big part of my life growing up in central Illinois, and after they broke up my childhood ended in a way.

It was a sad sad concert. Asa was wasted and talking non-sense, nick looked pissed, and the place was packed. It was a very fitting end, especially with the stage rush during "House Fire."

JV, Park, and childhood, you will be missed!

This is my first blog entry, ever.

I just started this company, and it is a way to showcase my photography and random things I am doing with my life.

I should introduce myself. My name is Alex Reside, and I am trying to make it in the photography business. I am a photographer at the Daily Vidette. So, I do a lot of journalistic photography, but I am always trying new things. I take lots of pictures of bands and my friends.
